No Drugs, No Executions: Is This The End of the Death Penalty?
As states scramble to find new lethal cocktails, a lack of options could spell the end of capital punishment.Read more. [Image: CA Dept. of Corrections/Reuters]
gets up on soap box & clears throat, then starts to speak
The end of state-sanctioned killing? Yes, please. I’m so tired of politicians, like the Gov. of Texas (who has been in office non-stop since December 2000) who call themselves “pro-life” yet support state-sanctioned homicides. [That’s what is listed as the cause of death on the death certificates of people executed by the State of Texas - homicide.] According to one online list of pending executions in the US the next execution in Texas is scheduled for 6 p.m. CST on Tuesday, 12 November 2013. And once again Rick Perry will prove that he is about as pro-life as the bubonic plague.
Texas has life without possibility of parole as an option in sentencing. There is no moral excuse to keep killing people. It doesn’t save any money. Go ask your favourite search engine about all the studies that have shown how much more extremely expensive choosing death over life is for state governments.

Dr. Caroline Heldman is a professor of politics specializing in issues of media, gender, and race in the US. Her talk, “The sexy lie” takes on issues of gender-based expectations and sexual objectification. Watch the entire talk below:
People should not be viewed as objects of any sort.
American population density. Look at all that space for immigration.
Lots and lots of room.
7/8ths of my ancestors are post-1492 immigrants. The remainder came sometime long before that, but the point is they all immigrated to the Americas from somewhere else.
The United States does not have a rape problem - it has a rape epidemic. A woman in the U.S. is raped every two minutes, 42 percent of victims are raped before they are 18 years old. 1 in 3 Native women report being raped, as do almost 19 percent of black women. 97 percent of rapists will never go to jail.
It’s our responsibility as journalists to ensure that we are covering stories of sexual assault with truthfulness, care, and in a way that does not make the country a safer place for rapists. We are not just media makers - we shape the culture as well. So let’s make it a culture that’s safer and more just for girls, women, and all survivors of sexual assault.
How to Write About Rape: Rules for Journalists, my latest atThe Nation (via jessicavalenti)97% of rapists will never go to jail! 97%! Shameful numbers. And don’t get me started about the very serious (and extremely dishonourable) problem in the U. S. military.
